IATA is very pleased to announce that STEADES, the Safety Trend Evaluation Analysis and Data Exchange System has signed its 120th customer. STEADES is now receiving upwards of 100,000 pilot reports each year. With the integration of cabin reporting over the next few months, this figure is expected to climb to well over 125,000 reports per year. Not only are the STEADES benchmarks improved by the increase in participation and growth in data, but IATA has added new elements such as a measure for global reporting culture. Airlines can use this benchmark for comparisons of their own reporting culture.STEADES participation amongst AQD users continues to grow. AQD users now make up approximately 20% of the STEADES membership. AQD ensures that the information sent electronically to STEADES is confidential, has been consistently classified, and can be reviewed without manual preparation. As a result, IATA STEADES contributors benefit from enhanced safety performance that can be benchmarked against industry trends.
In addition to receiving interactive benchmarking workbooks, in 2010 STEADES members also received analysis on the following topics:
- Airport Markings Deficiencies
- Airport and ATM specific analysis for Toronto, Khartoum, Tripoli, Philippines, South Atlantic,
- Anti / De-icing Events
- Turbulence Injuries
- Cargo Smoke/Fire Warnings
- Foreign Object Damage
- Cargo Door Indications
- Configuration Warnings.
Some key findings from the 1,814 reports of configuration warnings between 2001 and 2010 showed that in 24% of reports flaps were selected before gear was fully extended due to ATC request to reduce approach speed in order to maintain separation with preceding traffic. In all of these cases, once gear was fully extended, the configuration warning stopped and a normal landing followed.
The dataset also showed that gear configuration warnings accounted for 40% of the dataset and differences were noted between Boeing and Airbus fleets. Contact

STEADES analysis scheduled for Q1 2011 includes:
- Cargo Smoke/Fire Warnings
- Personal Electronic Devices
- NOTAM Issues
- Unstable approach.
